Design with Depth: How Alex Tailor Builds Brands with Soul

Grounded, intentional, and deeply inspired by her roots—Alex Tailor is the founder and designer behind Alex Tailor Design Studio, a boutique branding studio based in Ojai. She works with solopreneurs and wellness creatives to craft strategy-led brands that don’t just look beautiful—they feel aligned.

We asked Alex to share more about her journey, her creative life in Ojai, and what she’s building next.

Q: What do you do and who do you serve?

Alex: I run a boutique branding and design studio out of Ojai. I’m the wing-woman to solopreneurs and creators ready to bring their vision to life through strategy-led brand identity, packaging, and web design. My clients are often founders who care deeply about their product or service, but need help translating that into a brand that feels as intentional and beautiful as what they offer. With a mix of creative intuition, structure, and design knowledge, I build brands with soul and staying power.

Q: What does success mean to you now, versus what it used to mean?

Alex: In the beginning, success meant being fully booked—proving I could actually do this full-time! I thought if I hit a certain income goal or client count, I’d feel like I made it. But over time, I’ve realized success has more to do with how my work supports the life I want: space to be creative, to collaborate with people I truly adore, and to feel proud of what I put out into the world. Now, it’s less about being busy and more about being aligned.

Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone in your industry just starting out?

Alex: Take the time to really get to know your clients—not just their business goals, but them as people. It’s easy to get caught up in deliverables and deadlines, but at the end of the day, these are real humans who trusted you with something important: their business. It’s never just a transaction. They’re collaborators, champions, and often eventual friends. Keep them close, listen carefully, and cultivate strong relationships.

Q: What’s next for you or your business?

Alex: I’m in a cool transition season right now, moving from mostly custom client work to building out digital tools and (hopefully!) a creative space for wellness professionals and fellow designers. The vision is to create a home for people who care about aesthetics, clarity, and connection. I’m also working more closely with my husband on a retail and experiential design venture, which has been such an energizing expansion. The big dream? A studio that’s the go-to when you’re ready to build something beautiful—from your logo to your physical space.

"Community is everything to me. When I first moved to Ojai, I barely knew anyone. Taking a chance on a local meetup like VCBW changed the course of my life and business.”

— Alex Tailor

Q: What lights you up outside of work?

Alex: Slow mornings, black coffee, and being surrounded by nature. I love meandering on my favorite trails, treasure hunting for vintage blouses in Ventura, or pretending to play food critic at new restaurants. Cooking something from scratch (I make a mean chocolate chip cookie) or flipping through logo design books is pure bliss. I also love spending time with my husband and our cat, Lotus—a feisty Tortie who definitely runs the house.

Q: What’s something about you people might not know—but should?

Alex: My middle name is Tailor, in honor of my grandfather, who was a tailor by trade. A young immigrant from Italy, he came to California at 21 and built a life for his family—running a menswear store by day and flipping houses by night. His legacy reminds me that creativity, compassion, and hard work are the ingredients of a joyful life and a strong community.

Q: How has being part of a community impacted your personal growth?

Alex: Community is everything to me. When I first moved to Ojai, I barely knew anyone. Taking a chance on a local meetup like VCBW changed the course of my life and business. Being surrounded by women also navigating business, creativity, family, and self-growth made me feel more seen, brave, and supported. It’s taught me that you don’t have to do it all alone.
